What is Diploma in law?

Diploma in law is a two year program that earns you a certificate that qualify you to apply direct entry in to any Nigeria university.

Diploma in law is a higher education qualification offered by Polytechnics, Monotechnics, Technical Colleges and some universities in Nigeria. A diploma in law course is two years of full time/part-time programme. Graduates are at the end of the programme are usually offered an Ordinary National Diploma Certificate (OND).
A Graduate with a diploma in law certificate can study further by applying for a 200 level direct entry into the any university In Nigeria. 200 level direct entry is subject to diploma CGPA. A low CGPA may result in starting from 100 level at the university.

Brief history of Flailas

Fati Lami Abubakar Institute for legal and Administrative Studies, kpakungu minna Niger state. Address P.M.B 133, Bida Road, Kpakungu, Minna, Niger State. The Institute started with two academic programmes. These ware diploma in art and diploma in law (Sharia and Civil) in the early 1980s, at the temporary site of Zungeru Collage of advanced studies (ZUCAS) Bida. When ZUCAS later moved to its Permanente site at Zungeru, the Institute with the two programmes were transferred to Minna and temporarily sited at college of art and Islamic studies Tudun Fulani, Minna. In 1985/86 session, the Institute was merged with its host collage, Collage of art and Islamic studies (CAIS) and renamed Collage of art and Islamic legal studies (CAILS) to implied the law component of the programme run in the merged Institute. engr. A.A Kure In September, 1999 the Institute was moved to its permanent site at Kpakungu, Minna by the government engr. A.A Kure of engr. A.A Kure and renamed Justice Fati Lami Abubakar Collage of art and Islamic legal studies (JFLA CAILS) after the former first lady of Nigeria.

The legal instrument backing the Institute was signed in to law on 21 of October, 2001. But in 2011, the Niger state government under the chief savant, Dr. Maazu Babangida Aliyu (CON) by its legal notice NO.,20Vol.15 renamed the Institute as Fati Lamin Abubakar Collage for legal and general studies (FLA CLGS) Minna and later renamed as Fati Lami Abubakar Institute for legal and Administrative Studies (FLAILAS) Minna.

Brief history of AKCILS

The Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies (AKCILS) is a postsecondary institution located in Kano, the most populous city in Muslim-majority northern Nigeria.

AKCILS offers Islamic education and training in other subjects, such as languages, civil law, and social sciences, to young men and women.

Students attend the college either to obtain terminal degrees or to prepare for university education. In addition to its many Nigerian- trained faculty and staff, AKCILS has hired several Nigerian Muslim graduates of foreign Islamic universities.

Foreign-educated faculty members at AKCILS maintain far-ranging professional and religious activities outside the college. These include directing their own Islamic schools, serving in state government bureaucracies, teaching in mosques, and publishing religious tracts. These faculty members often pursue additional postgraduate degrees inside and outside Nigeria. In this way, AKCILS serves as an institutional base for its faculty, from which they can continue to build profiles as scholars, professionals, and religious leaders. In other words, AKCILS has been one mechanism by which foreign- educated Northern Nigerian Muslim leaders have been reintegrated into their society. Drawing on interviews with staff members, speeches given at the college, and unpublished materials on AKCILS’s history, this essay examines interrelationships between AKCILS’s role as part of Kano’s shari’a system and its role as a professional platform for Arab- educated faculty members.

Brief history of Center For Islamic And Legal Studies, Institute Of Administration, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Kaduna State.

The institute was founded in 1962 as a regional University by the defunct Northern Nigerian Regional Government and took over by the Federal Government in 1975.It thereby became a Federal university. The Centre, which is part of the University, came into existence in 1966 when the need for an Institution for Islamic Legal Studies arose, following the decision of the Kano School of Arabic Studies- later Abdullahi Bayero College and Bayero University- to Concentrate on Arabic instead of Islamic law which it was initially catering for.

Pursuant to this decision of the Kano School, the then Dean, faculty of law A.B.U, Professor Noel James Coulson, approached the Ministry of justice with the suggestion for establishing a training Centre for Alkalis on October 29, 1965.

This was wholeheartedly supported by the Sardauna of Sokoto- Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello and it began its work in 1966 but its formal establishment could not be executed because of political events during that period. Its present building and library were, however, constructed in 1971 and formally opened on the 22nd day of March, 1971.

In 1968, the Centre started a fifteen, month intensive teaching in various aspects of Islamic Law leading to the award of Diploma in Islamic Legal Studies and a more advanced programme leading to the award of Diploma in Shari’ah and Civil law in 1973.

In 1977, the Board of Governors of the Institute of Administration at its 10th Meeting approved the Constitution of the Centre for Islamic Legal Studies and subsequently, the Centre became an autonomous teaching and research unit of Ahmadu Bello Univesity. Around 1982-83 the Centre started participating and became responsible for the preparation of syllabus, reading material and teaching of Islamic law at the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Education Samaru at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Centre being a research Centre engages in various research programmes which result into the publication of journals books, articles, monographs, subject biographies, indexes, research papers for national and international seminars and conferences. The Centre has its own journal which it publishes with the title: Journal of Islamic and Comparative Law and it has presently published 30 volumes covering a variety of subjects on Islamic law and comparative issues. The latest volume is June 2015.

Its operated under the auspices of the then College of Arts and Science Sokoto situated at its temporary site at Unguwar Rogo area, Sokoto under direct supervision of the Ministry of Justice, Sokoto.

Brief history of kwara State College Of Arabic And Islamic Legal Studies, Ilorin.

The Kwara State College of Arabic & Islamic Legal Studies, Ilorin was established in September 1992 by the Kwara State Government with No. 5 of 2993.

This followed persistent agitations by the Kwara State Muslim Community requesting the State Government to make provision for the graduates of private Arabic schools in the State to be integrated into the formal Western Education System.

The first taken by the State Government in this respect was the establishment of College of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Jebba, Ilorin, Babanna (now in Niger State) and Okene (now in Kogi State).

Hence, the establishment of the Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS) was to provide the aforementioned Colleges and other similar institutions with a place to acquire tertiary education. Upon the appointment of the three pioneer principal officers in October, 1992, the College (CAILS) commenced its operation at the premises of the Shariah Court of Appeal, Ilorin. While in December, 1992 the College moved to its present site to start academic activities with seconded staff from the Ministry of Education and the Teaching Services Commission.

Berief history of Atiku Abubakar College of Legal and Islamic Studies Nguru, Yobe state.

The Institute was established in the year 2000. The law establishing the college (YBS Edict No. of 1996, amended 2016) gives the college mandate to offer course of study, training and (or) research leading to the award of Diploma and Nigeria Certificate in Education (N.C.E).

Brief history of College for legal studies Yola , Adamawa.

The College for legal studies, was established in November, 1978 the establishment of the College was in response to joint Memo submitted to the Executive Council of the former Gongola State by then Honorable commissioners for Education and Justice in April 1978. The control and supervisory powers of the College was under the Ministry of Education until early 1984 when it was switched over to the Ministry of Justice. The amended Edict establishing the College was signed into law by the former Military Administrator of Adamawa State Lt. Col. A.G.Husseini (of blessed memory) in April, 1999. The Edict has retrospective effect hence it is deemed to have come into operation on the 1st day of September, 1978. The College became affiliated to the University of Maiduguri with effect from the 1st day of October 1986.




The objectives and functions of the College are clearly spelt out in sections 4 and 5 of the law establishing the College.
