The Aims and Objectives of ASUU is to secure adequate funding, improved salary package, autonomy and academic freedom in order to curb brain drain and ensure the survival of the university system.

ASUU is a trade union whose objectives include regulation of relations between academic staff and employers; Encouragement of the participation of its members in the affairs of the university system and of the nation.

Aims and Objectives of ASUU also includes establishment and maintenance of a high standard of academic performance and professional practice, stablishment and maintenance of just and proper conditions for Universities education.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities transformed into its present state in 1978 with its roots and various transformations dating back to 1955 when the association of University Teachers (AUT) was formed.

The ASUU Strike

The following are the 10 Reasons Why ASUU is always embanking On Strike. These are:
10- Nigerian University medical students trained in the most dangerous environment, some only see medical tools in books
9- 23,030 (61.0%) of the lecturers are employed in Federal universities while 14,474 (39.0%) teach in State Universities.
8- 83% of the lecturers in Nigerian universities are male while 17% are female.
7- 78% of Nigerian Universities rely heavily on part-time and visiting lecturers.
6- 80% of Nigerian Universities are grossly under-staffed
5- No university library in Nigeria is fully automated. Less than 35% are partiall
4- Nigerian Universities Library resources are outdated and manually operated. Book shelves are homes to rats/cockroaches
3- Internet Services are non- existent, or epileptic and slow IN 99% of Nigerian Universities
2- More than 50% don’t use Public Address System in their lecture OVERCROWDED rooms/theatres.
1- Less than 10% of the universities have Video Conferencing facility.
1- Less than 20% of the universities use Interactive Boards
